SFG Review of MAG

When Sony and Zipper Interactive unveiled MAG a couple of years ago; I, like many of you, was excited to see such an ambitious game on the home console front.  In MAG, players get to take part in the Shadow War, joining one of three factions in the game Valor, Sver, and Raven.

For my time in MAG, I chose to go the way of Valor Company and wage war against the other two factions.  Since there is no single player mode (training doesn’t count), this will be a very short review.

Does MAG work? Absolutely, I don’t know what sort of Voodoo Magic that Zipper whipped up, but other developers need to take a lesson.  MAG proves that games don’t have to be limited to just 16 or less players.

Does MAG look good?  Not really, but with that many players at the same time some things were bound to take a hit.  While not on par with other PlayStation exclusives, it’s not shabby by any  stretch of the imagination.

The control scheme is your standard FPS layout, fans of the genre should be able to pick up a PS3 controller and dive right in without any difficulty.

I must stress that MAG is not a run of the mill shooter, there is alot of depth in this squad based shooter.  If you are looking for a run of the mill shooter, then look elsewhere.  In MAG no one man is Rambo here.  You must work with your team or face certain death alone.

In short, MAG is not really impressive beyond the fact that you can join into a battle with 255 other players.  I feel that this game could have used a few more months of development.  I give MAG a respectable 6 out of 10.
