Can you survive the Cosmic Sneeze.. SFG’s Widget’s Odyssey review

We all love things in small sizes. A little chihuahua earned pop culture icon status, by pitching us Americanized Mexican food. A little white robot was the true hero, in the battle against the Empire. Millions of people cheered on the kid from the Goonies when he played for Notre Dame……and he will always be Rudy to us. The PsP Mini initiative is rapidly approaching that status for me. In the summer months when titles are scarce, it is very refreshing to know I will have a few minis to choose from each week. Which is great, because of all the summer traveling that goes on, there is always something at a fraction of the price to keep the kid from getting bored in the car. This week Frima Studio, who developed the great title Zombie Tycoon, released a new title called Widget’s Odyssey on to the PSN. In Widget’s Odyssey you control Spad, Cosmo, Bruce, Helmut, and Monk. 5 different robots out to save the universe against the evil Yagor and his minions. On a side note, who here doesn’t want to have minions. I know I do.

Widget’s Odyssey, is a puzzle platformer that oozes the signature Frima Studio charm. It possesses some magnificent little cut scenes that made me want to keep playing. This game is cute as it is tough.Sometimes they are not always clear on what you are supposed to do next but it usually always right in front of you, and then you get that AH-HA moment. I never once felt frustrated even when I was confused, there was just smiles and desire to keep on playing. This title looked and sounded nice playing on my large screen and through my stereo. Even stretched out, the graphics kept their form and was actually pleasing on the eye. Of course they looked even better on the PSP. The controls are smooth, and the PSP’s stick wasn’t the problem it can be. This title reminds of a 2d side scrolling Ratchet and Clank, kinda the best way I can describe the look and vibe of this title.

So do I recommend this title… yes very much so. The best part Widget’s Odyssey is the price. It shipped at a whopping $1.99 for a fun title that I can play on my PS3 and PSP. Let me see, I can get this or two McDonald’s double cheeseburgers. The burgers will leave me bloated and disgusted with myself, but this just left me wanting more. Fortunately, there will be a second helping later in the summer, when they release Widget’s Odyssey 2.

This is a fun, fast paced title that has a nice pick up and play accessibility. For the price and the fun, Widget’s Odyssey is a praise worthy 9 out of 10.

Please remember to support the Indie developer and check out their site www.frimastudio.com, and check back next week when we take a look at their newest title Young Thor.
